Personal story as a teacher:
I left the practice
of law to become an English teacher. It was the hardest job I
ever had. As a teacher, you are in the trenches and really making
a difference with your students. They look to you as a role model
outside of their family. I discovered that the classroom is not
only for conveying subject matter but also for teaching life skills,
like how to respect one another's uniqueness. I found that introducing
new and diverse material assisted in my student's appreciation
of class.
How to make it fun? That's the question. So I created a "Build
a Book" program that has helped make authors and illustators of
my students. It was so easy to incorporate into the weekly schedule.
Later we coordinated with other teachers, like for art and science,
and the school nurse to give guidance along the way. What's better
than an interactive, interdisciplinary lesson plan. Life was made
easier and the kids and parents loved it. (This teacher aid is
free with any purchase.)
How these books enable you to help
children with Asthma, Diabetes or Heart conditions.
New, interactive and innovative books on
children's health (topics include children's heart, asthma and
diabetes) are perfect complements to any class curriculum. Recent
studies show that the number one concern for kids with Asthma,
Diabetes or a Heart condition is how their peers treat them. You
can effectively teach tolerance and acceptance of children's health
issues as well as cultural diversity with these approved supplemental
resources. It helps you transform your classroom into an open
and inclusive environment.
Six specific things you can do:
- Refer them to your school librarian.
- Use them in your curriculum. Send
me an email for feedback.
- Do a multidisciplinary lesson with the school nurse or gym
class.
- Refer this website to the people in your school system
or district.
- Signup for the newsletter.
We produce a quarterly email newsletter with specific materials
that can support you in dealing with these children's health
issues in your classroom.
- Recommend these books to a family to empower
them in dealing with their children's health conditions.
